AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside), also known as acadesine, is a synthetic nucleoside analog widely utilized in laboratory research involving cellular energy metabolism. Once transported into cells, AICAR is converted to ZMP, an AMP analog that activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a central regulator of cellular energy homeostasis. Because of this mechanism, AICAR has become a foundational research tool for investigating metabolic signaling pathways, mitochondrial function, and adaptive cellular responses to energetic stress.
